ENJOYMENT
There’s no doubt about it. The Willamette River has seen an explosion of water-focused activities and recreation over the last few years. It’s a very exciting place these days with fishing, kayaking, dragon boat races, sailing, rowing, paddle boarding and pleasure boating. But there’s room for more, especially beyond the busy stretch of river along Portland’s city center. Real opportunities exist along the upriver stretches for similar recreational activities including more day and evening cruises, paddle trips, races, regattas and more.
APPRECIATION
As part of our commitment to appreciating this river running through us, the WCA will foster both creative and practical initiatives such as:
Sponsor annual photo and poetry contests aimed at youth in our riverside communities, encouraging them to share their creative vision of the ways we are connected and enriched by the Willamette.
Demonstrate how water health in the Willamette has improved over time, resulting in a significant renewal and re-blossoming of natural habitat throughout the watershed in recent years. A better understanding and appreciation of our water health successes will help to ensure everyone’s ongoing respect and enjoyment of the river.
UNITE COMMUNITIES
Better than any one road in the region, the Willamette River is a sort of liquid Main Street connecting many communities. This central thoroughfare offers those of us living in the corridor the chance to rethink our relationship to each other and see ourselves as a unity of neighbors — each with very cool things to offer! In the good old-fashioned tradition of a Sunday or weekend visit, the WCA hopes folks will sometimes look no further than their own ‘river relations’ when planning leisure activities. And to encourage it, we’re developing a network of business discounts that will make a WCA ‘stay-cation’ weekend getaway, expedition or activity in the corridor an enjoyable alternative to travel further a field. Rediscover your own backyard. Soon you’ll be able to use your WCA membership discounts for a cruise to Oregon City and brunch overlooking the falls. Or a kayak trip to craft fairs and farmers markets in Milwaukie or Lake Oswego.
